8 Reasons Why You Should Become a Cosmetologist

Revised: December 11th, 2019

There are plenty of reasons why you might choose a career in beauty. From the flexible hours to the creative freedom, cosmetologists often enjoy their time behind the chair. But here are 8 more reasons to love the job you should know when thinking about a career in beauty.

Reason #1: Freedom Of An Entrepreneur

As a licensed stylist, you may have the freedom to work when you want and as much as you want depending on the type of salon you work in. As a stylist, you’re an entrepreneur. Most people who graduate from cosmetology school work in salons. They build their own businesses through their client lists and experience the freedom that entrepreneurs enjoy as they market themselves and their work.

Even if you work in a salon you don’t own, there may be flexibility in terms of scheduling. Do you prefer weekends or afternoons? Working around your client’s schedules can give you freedom with your time as well.

Reason #2: Your Income Reflects Your Work

Have you ever heard your friends complain about their jobs not paying them what they’re truly worth? When you’re working as a stylist, the amount and type of work you do in the salon has a direct, often immediate, affect on your income. The more clients you help, the more money you can make.

According to a 2003 study by the NACCAS (National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences), the average income for a stylist in a salon reaches $50,000 a year. Some make much more. If the thought of controlling your income is appealing to you, being a licensed stylist may be the profession for you.

Reason #3: You Have a Job You Enjoy

Working on clients’ hair and makeup can be exciting. First, you’re helping them to look their best. Second, this is a chance to let your creative spark show as you try new and provocative styles. Your clients give you a lot of control over how they look and it can be a lot of responsibility.

You also have the chance to learn about new makeup and hair styling techniques. Your clients will look to you as an expert and resource in guiding them to products and styles that will help them look their best. This is one of the reasons why being a stylist is so rewarding.

Reason #4: You May Get To Work With Celebrities

Many aspiring stylists attending cosmetology school want to eventually work in the world of entertainment and fashion. If you develop your creativity and skills, you might be asked to style the hair and makeup of models, Instagram influencers, and celebrities. Many stylists work in salons first to learn the latest cutting-edge techniques and then move on to working with music personalities, actors, politicians, and other people in the public eye.

Reason #5: Opportunity For Earning Commissions

Not only do you control your income by the amount and type of work you do for your clients; you may also increase your earnings by getting paid commissions for hair care and beauty products you encourage your clients to purchase. Your clients need these products anyway. Why not buy them while they’re at the salon? If a new product comes out that would be perfect for one of your customers, simply suggest it to them and you may make a commission for the sale. Everybody wins.

Reason #6: A Unique Work Environment

As a licensed stylist, you can work in many different capacities and in several types of facilities. Salons are probably the most common, but you also have the chance to work in places like spas, hotels and resorts, the theater, and in education as a cosmetologist instructor.

Cosmetologists are responsible for a lot of different jobs. You may spend days behind a salon chair, scissors in hand, or perhaps at a retail counter, selling new makeup products. Beauty industry professionals are lucky to have so many tasks throughout the day, and so many different places to work. You get flexibility in your work environment and your types of work tasks.

Reason #7: You Enjoy Talking With People

As a licensed stylist, you may have the opportunity to talk to friends, your co-workers and your clients throughout the day. If you enjoy speaking with interesting people (don’t we all?), you’ll definitely enjoy your career as a cosmetologist. Every day is different. Each client will have new stories whenever they visit. You may find yourself becoming friends with many of your clients. In fact, talking with people is a major part of your job and a great way to build up your list of clients.

Reason #8: You Are Always Learning

If you are interested in a beauty career, you probably already have a thirst for knowledge and want to know more about makeup, hair styling, and more. After getting licensed, your education doesn’t stop! Beauty is always changing and styles are constantly being updated. As a stylist you can’t get stagnant. You will have to improve your skills all the time and be on the lookout for new opportunities.
