Meet The Staff: Kate Mulrenan
Passion and positivity are part of the Innovate Salon Academy experience, and Kate Mulrenan is a perfect example of that energy at our school! As one of our bright and driven instructors, we had the special opportunity of getting to know her and her story. She’s an outstanding example of how a career in the beauty industry is what you make of it!
About Kate
Kate began her journey into cosmetology at a young age. She always had an interest in hair and knew she wanted to be a hairdresser. She enrolled in cosmetology school right out of high school, and worked as a stylist and salon manager for five years. During her time at that salon, a mentor of Kate’s helped her discover that she had a love and passion for teaching, so she set out in search of a place where she could complete a beauty school educator program.
Kate called John Sickles, one of the owners at Innovate Salon Academy, to look for a job at first, and was hired to work as the salon coordinator. After some time at the school, John pulled Kate aside and asked her what she thought about completing an educator program at Innovate. John saw the passion and drive that Kate has to be an educator, so he enrolled her in the five-month educator program complete with a scholarship!
Changing Gears
Kate’s biggest challenge in the instructor program was making the transition from cosmetology to esthetics. During her educator’s training she found a love for esthetics. Having a background in hair, Kate worked hard to gain the knowledge she now passes on to her eager esthetics students. With the support of her educational team and advanced classes at the Dermalogica Institute,in New York City, she became a sensational esthetics educator.
What Kate Loves About Innovate
When asked about what she loves most about Innovate Salon Academy, she says she enjoys the people she works with. She says that the owners in particular are extremely passionate about the school and the success of the students. That passion passes through everyone else in the school, from the instructors and staff on down to the students. This same passion leads the owners to strive to find the most talented instructors with the most modern techniques and protocols. Aside from that, Kate says that she’s made incredible friends at the school, and she feels like the school supports her in everything she does. She also loves that the school has a strong focus on offering advanced education so that students can have more opportunities to succeed after graduating.
Advice For Future Students
Kate has some fantastic advice for future beauty school students:
”Be very open-minded to new information. Always come in with a good, positive outlook because positivity will drive you to be successful in this industry. Never hold back because you’re scared, you’re always going to have some type of support system to pull you through it.”
Kate’s advice is excellent because beauty school can be new and uncertain for anyone. Tackling challenges head on and being open-minded to new things can really help you stand out and excel!
Kate herself is always open minded and is always willing to help everyone, from her amazing educational team to her students. She definitely follows her own advice. You should also, if you want to be a leader in your industry.
